INDYCAR penalizes Foyt Racing’s No. 14 entry over driver ballast issue

Sanctioning body INDYCAR has levied a post-race technical inspection penalty on the No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing entry following Sunday’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.

The No. 14 Sexton Properties Chevrolet driven to a season-best, second-place finish by Dallas resident Santino Ferrucci was found to be under the required driver ballast weight following the event won by Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global. Ferrucci finished 3.5931-seconds behind Kirkwood’s No. 27 Siemens AWS Honda.

During post-race inspection, INDYCAR discovered the driver ballast needed to bring the combined weight of the driver and driver ballast to 185-pounds was underweight on car No. 14, and not within the driver ballast weight tolerance of 0.00 to + 1.00-pounds.

However, also during inspection, the series found the weight of car No. 14, itself, was 10-pounds over the minimum weight for road and street-circuits of 1,785-pounds and competed over the minimum weight requirement on-track.

A.J. Foyt Racing is the Waller, Texas-based organization founded by 90-year-old open-wheel icon A.J. Foyt Jr. of Houston. The No. 14 car was deemed in violation of Rule 14.4.2. Driver Equivalency Weight:

_ Rule 14.4.2.2. Driver Equivalency Weight must bring the combined weight of the Driver and Driver ballast to 185-pounds.

_ Rule 14.4.2.5. The Driver ballast weight tolerance is 0.00 to + 1.00-pounds. The Driver Equivalency Weight must be installed and secured in the designed location forward of the seatback. This location may only be used for Driver ballast.

This rule is in place to equalize the weight of varying-sized drivers so there is no advantage based upon the weight of the driver. Post-race weight determination, as implemented by INDYCAR, is a common practice after every event and in nearly all forms of motorsports to ensure an equal playing field.

The No. 14 entry is allowed to retain its second-place finish. However, the organization has been fined $25,000 and will forfeit 25 championship driver and entrant points. The bonus point for leading a lap also is not awarded. The No. 14 also is ineligible for engine points and prize money associated with the race.

Ferrucci, who had moved up to 10th in the driver standings post-race, is now 14th in the championship after seven of 17 NTT IndyCar Series events.

Updated results of the 2025 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix can be found here.

Members may contest imposition of the penalties detailed in the review and appeal procedures of the NTT IndyCar Series Rulebook.

Series teams have a weekend off before heading to Madison, Ill., just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta at World Wide Technology Raceway. The race on Sunday, June 15, will be broadcast by FOX Sports in primetime starting at 8 p.m. (EDT).

ABC Supply Co., Inc., has announced that $4.7-million was raised for Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) as part of a significant fund-raising effort in May for National Military Appreciation Month in conjunction with the 109th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on May 25th.

ABC Supply, an HFOT Platinum Partner, matched all donations up to $1-million for the Month of May and “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Several HFOT veterans participated in the Memorial Day Weekend’s activities at IMS. The veterans received exclusive access to a garage tour of the No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing Chevrolet driven by Santino Ferrucci, walked the iconic Yard of Bricks and enjoyed a premier view of the patriotic, stars-and-stripes-themed HFOT entry driven to a revised fifth-place finish.

“It was an honor to drive the Homes For Our Troops car in the Indianapolis 500 and extremely rewarding to know that they not only met their goal but exceeded it _ again,” said Ferrucci, a 26-year-old resident of Dallas. “Raising over $4-million is incredible and it will help a lot of our severely injured post-9/11 veterans. Those funds will go a very long way in building multiple houses for them, helping them financially and getting their lives back on-track.

“At the end of the day, A.J. Foyt Racing had a great Indianapolis 500 and Homes For Our Troops had an amazing one, as well.”

Ferrucci, who originally finished seventh in the traditional 33-car field, was moved to fifth after post-race inspection by INDYCAR levied penalties against a pair of Andretti Global entries.

INDYCAR announced the No. 28 Allegra Honda of second-place Marcus Ericsson of Sweden and the No. 27 Siemens Honda driven to sixth by Kyle Kirkwood _ as well as the No. 90 PREMA Racing entry driven by Callum Ilott of Great Britain to 12th _ were found in violation of the rulebook. All three were dropped to the rear of the 33-car field in order of their placement in the unofficial results _ Ericsson to 31st, Kirkwood to 32nd and Ilott to 33rd.

The Andretti Global penalties moved Foyt Racing’s David Malukas and his No. 4 Clarience Technologies Chevrolet from third to a career-best second behind first-time Indy 500 champion Alex Palou of Spain, driver of the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

“We are beyond grateful for ABC Supply’s sponsorship and support during the 2025 Indy 500,” said HFOT President/CEO Brig. Gen., USA (Retired) Tom Landwermeyer. “Their generous $1-million match was instrumental to raising $4.7-million during the Month of May, and the patriotic livery of the No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing Chevy gave incredible visibility to our mission of ‘Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives.’^”

ABC Supply has ardently supported HFOT since 2020 and donated the design of the race car to generate awareness of the organization’s mission of building and donating specially-adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 veterans. HFOT has built over 410 specially-adapted homes since its inception in 2004.

“Giving back to the community and honoring our veterans is at the heart of who we are,” said Mike Jost, president/CEO at ABC Supply. “The generosity we’ve seen throughout this campaign has been truly inspiring, and we are grateful to everyone who contributed to making a real difference for our veterans.”

Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) is a publicly-funded 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Most of the veterans receiving assistance have sustained life-altering injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).

These homes restore some of the freedom and independence the veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery and rebuilding their lives.

HFOT builds homes where each veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the veteran after home-delivery. Homes For Our Troops has built and donated over 410 homes in 45 states and currently has 80 active projects in various stages of construction nationwide. Since HFOT’s inception in 2004, nearly 90-cents of every dollar spent has gone directly to program services for veterans.
