ENNIS, Texas – Matt Smith rode an iron horse to the finish line at the Stampede of Speed NHRA Texas Fall Nationals on Sunday at the Texas Motorplex.

Smith, driving his Denso Auto Parts/Stockseth/Matt Smith Racing EBR motorcycle, regained the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead by defeating Hector Arana Jr. in the final round. Smith got the win when Arana left early and tripped the red light. Smith ended up going the distance with a run of 6.839 at 199.08 mph.

“It was a great weekend for this Denso team,” Smith said. “We were pretty flawless all weekend and we were low every round. We’ve got a pretty awesome team.”

It was Smith’s first career victory at the Texas Motorplex, his fifth victory of the season and 31st in his PSM racing career.

“Since 2005, I’ve always wanted to win this race and never got it done, and I’m just glad to get it done,” Smith said. “We’ve had the best bike all year. Steve has definitely stepped his program up and we’re going to go head-to-head with him the rest of the year, and hopefully we can pull this out and get a fifth championship. That’s the goal and we’re going to do everything we can to try and do it.”

Smith marched his way to the finals by defeating Michael Ray, Chris Bostick and his wife, Angie Smith in the semifinals.

Arana Jr. reached the finals for the first time this year and 28th time of his career with round wins over Kelly Clontz, Jerry Savoie and Steve Johnson. Johnson suffered mechanical problems in the semifinals and was not able to make his run.

Smith holds an eight-point lead over Johnson with three NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle races remaining. The next NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series race will be held Oct. 15-17 at Bristol Dragway.
