Sandwiches and Cocktails for Richmond
Today’s Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway made me think of a restaurant that used to exist there called the The Black Sheep. Richmond has a lot of great restaurants and fantastic food, but an unusual sandwich sounds perfect for today. This sandwich is named after the CSS Virginia, a Confederate warship. It’s fitting because this sandwich in its original form is HUGE and eating it is kind of like a battle. In my at-home version, I use the baguette, but I cut it into four sandwiches instead of one! The sandwich consists of fried chicken livers and a homemade slaw. Making this at home is the only way to get it since The Black Sheep has permanently closed, but it’s worth the effort to try it out!
Some drink ideas to pair with this sandwich come from a fried chicken joint in Austin, Texas. Lucy’s Fried Chicken offers some cool cocktails that pair well with the richness of these fried livers. The recipes include Texas Whiskey Revival, Lucy Basilia and Watermelon Crawl to name a few.
Watch the Travel Channel story on the sandwich here. In the video you can see the preparation steps.
