Friday notebook: AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals at the Texas Motorplex

ENNIS – The action kicked off at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with full day of racing that included several drag racing classes competing in time trials, qualifying and elimination rounds – Super Street, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Dragster, Competition Eliminator and Grudge.  The weather was also ideal for racing, sunshine with a high of 72 degrees and winds were ENE at 10 to 15 mph.

The evening portion of the race card was billed as Friday Night Live and featured Grudge, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Top Alcohol Dragster, Gassers, Factory Stock Showdown, Top Fuel Harley, Pro Mod and Jet Dragster.

  • There were 16 drivers that competed in the first round of qualifying in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Top Alcohol Dragster division. Shawn Cowie of Langley, BC was the fastest after posting a run of 5.152 at 281.54 mph. It was his quickest pass this season, fastest of his career and third quickest run in the class. Matthew Cummings of Pompano Beach, FL was second at 5.198. 280.08.
  • In the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Top Alcohol Funny Car class Sean Bellemeur of Placentia, CA topped a 14-car field during the first qualifying session. Bellemeur clocked a 5.425 at 261.62 mph run in his 2018 Camaro. Annie Whiteley of Grand Junction, CO was second fastest in a 2017 Camaro after running a 5.429, 274.00 mph pass.
  • Brandon Snider of Atmore, AL was at the top of the leaderboard in the E3 Spark Plugs Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service division after the first round of qualifying. Snider went the distance in 5.680 at 251.77 in a Corvette. Khalid alBalooshi of Dubai UE was second fastest in a Camaro at 5.685 at 253.75 mph. It was alBalooshi’s career quickest pass and fastest run of the season. Sixteen drivers competed in the qualifying round.
  • In the Mickey Thompson Tires Top Fuel Harley Series there were seven riders that competed in the first qualifying session. Points leader Randal Andras of Morgan City, LA topped the field with a pass clocked at 6.201 at 225.86. Jay Turner of Julian, NC was second at 6.313 at 219.76. Andras is on pace to clinch the championship this weekend.
  • Stephen Bell of Shreveport, LA topped a 16-car field in the first qualifying session in the SAMTech.eduNHRA Factory Stock Showdown class. Bell made a pass in his 2018 Camaro at 7.858, 174.03. Aaron Stanfield of Bossier City, LA was second with a 7.863, 174.35 mph run.
