Brittany Force scores comeback win at the NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway

by Mike Haag | Posted on Sunday, April 22nd, 2018

BAYTOWN, Texas – The champ is back.

Defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Brittany Force, who opened the season at the Lucas Oil Winternationals in Pomona with a horrific wreck that nearly sidelined her racing season and career, returned to Victory Lane by winning the 31st annual NHRA SpringNationals on Sunday at Royal Purple Raceway.

“This is a big win for us because our season has been so up and down,” Force said. “Our wreck in Pomona was a tough start, but it’s because of the support system I have around me – sponsors and my team – that got us here today.”

Force defeated Terry McMillen in the final round with a winning run clocked at 3.762 seconds at 299.46 mph.  McMillen crossed the line with a pass of 3.818 at 311.56 mph.

“This is our third car that I’ve run in this season,” Force said.  “That’s a lot going on for me as a driver and the whole team. But we seem to like it. We pulled it out this weekend and didn’t test. Testing was qualifying for us. We went No. 1 Friday and went to No. 2 and won the thing, so I think we all like the car.

Force marched her way to the finals by defeating Terry Haddock in the opening round and then topped Doug Kalitta in the second round.  She reached the finals by defeating Tony Schumacher in the semifinal round with a 3.76, 299.80 mph pass.

“We kind of struggled a little bit today,” Force said.  “We hurt the car a few times but its right at 600 feet on.  The tires are spinning and I am driving the thing down and just try to get it to the finish line.  I don’t know where the guy is next to me is and it’s about getting there first.  I saw our win lights come on and we did it in the final round and that is the most important.”

McMillen, who was competing in his first final round race of the season and for his second career victory, reached the finals by defeating Antron Brown in the first round, Billy Torrence in the second round and Leah Pritchett in the semifinals.

The victory was her first of the season and eighth of her career.  She also becomes the seventh different driver at John Force Racing history to score a win at Royal Purple Raceway.  John Force, Courtney Force, Ashley Force, Robert Hight, Mike Neff and Tony Pedregon have all won Wally trophies here.

After climbing out of the car after her winning run, Force was very emotional while being interviewed by FOX Sports on television.

“I was emotional because it’s built off the championship,” Force said.  “It’s built off Pomona. Our team leaving Pomona last season was on this high.  We won a championship and that’s something every driver dreams of and we were able to accomplish that.  Coming back out to the opening and first race of the season at Pomona, the same track then the ultimate happened and then we wrecked.”

Force added, “It was really tough in Phoenix getting back in that car.  In Phoenix my guys knew it and for me I didn’t care about winning the race.  For me it was about getting back in that car and making runs. That’s all I cared about.  In Gainesville it was game on.  The competitive side was back and I just needed to get in the race car and do it.”

Today’s win moved her up to eighth in the point standings and she trails class leader Tony Schumacher by 115 points.  This is also her first victory since winning the season-finale race in Pomona in 2017.

“Getting this win was a huge surprise,” Force said.  “This is big for us.  It puts Pomona behind us and it pushes us towards a championship.”
