Boiled Shrimp and Bloody Marys. . .It’s Vegas, Baby!
Every time I go to Las Vegas there are many favorite things I do. Vegas is a place of excess. Everything is brighter, wilder and more exciting. Hopefully, today’s race will live up to that reputation! Among my required Vegas activities are eating at a buffet and drinking a lot. One of the treats on virtually every buffet is the mountain of boiled shrimp. One of the beautiful drinks I enjoy is the Bloody Mary. So as I sit at home in Texas watching the race, I’ll transport myself to Vegas with decadent snacks. As you watch today’s race from Las Vegas, you may want to make one of your favorite indulgences, too. If shrimp and Bloody Marys are your speed, you can share my recipes below.
Boiled Shrimp
2 lbs. shrimp
1 box Zatarain’s Crab/Shrimp Boil
2 lemons, quartered
1 onion, chopped
Garlic, minced
Fill a stockpot with water and add all ingredients except shrimp. Bring to a strong boil. Add shrimp. Return to a boil. Tightly cover. Remove from heat. Let steep for about 10 minutes. Make sure shrimp is opaque and cooked through. Chill and serve.
Cocktail sauce
ketchup
prepared horseradish
lemon juice
Mix the three ingredients in proportion to your taste.
Bloody Mary
So there are as many Bloody Mary recipes as there are people who drink them. I’m including links to some good ones. For me, I like to use V8 juice, Tito’s vodka, lemon juice, black pepper and celery salt as my base. I like to add munchies like olives, pickled okra, asparagus, pickled cauliflower and bacon. The bacon is especially decadent. It’s totally worth adding to your drink!
