Dueling donuts were served-up on the front stretch of The Milwaukee Mile by Pato O\u2019Ward and Alex Palou after completion of a rain-interrupted\/record-setting INDYCAR double-header in West Allis, Wis.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Ward won Sunday\u2019s Snap-on Makers and Fixers 250 to sweep both races on the historic 1.015-mile oval, winning the event suspended due to weather Saturday just a few hours after wheeling the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet to the checkered flag in the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Ward became the first driver to win two INDYCAR races on the same day since Rick Mears of Team Penske swept a pair of 125-milers on June 28, 1981 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. O’Ward also became the second McLaren Racing driver to win twice on the same day, joining Fort Worth\u2019s Johnny Rutherford, who won twice at Atlanta in 1979.<\/p>\n

In addition to Mears and \u201cLone Star J.R.,\u201d O\u2019Ward joined motorsports legends Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, Al Unser and Bobby Unser as the only drivers to score two INDYCAR wins in a single day. <\/p>\n

\u201cThose are heavy names,\u201d O\u2019Ward said during his post-race presser. \u201cThen you hear mine, you’re like, \u2018What?\u2019 Honestly, man, I’m just writing my own story. I really don’t know what’s in store for my INDYCAR career. So far I’ve dedicated my whole life to this. I always really dedicate myself to everything that I do to the best of my ability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m one hungry competitor. I love to go out there and compete and to challenge. It really is a bad day whenever we’re not able to do that. I feel like this year there’s been more of those than not. It’s been pretty crazy. I have three podiums, but all three of them have been a win. Before the last yellow when I was behind (David) Malukas, I was like, \u2018The two podiums I’ve had have both been wins. It would suck for the third one to be a second.\u2019 Racing gods heard me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, O\u2019Ward\u2019s three victories rank second only to Palou\u2019s six. In addition, McLaren Racing now boasts 32 victories in INDYCAR, including 14 since returning to full-time competition in 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe like Milwaukee,\u201d said O\u2019Ward, a 27-year-old native of Mexico with family ties to San Antonio, Texas. \u201cI\u2019ve dreamt of weekends like this, having the double-headers just a couple times in my career and wishing that I would win both in a weekend, and today we got to win both. It\u2019s a dream come true for myself and for the team. I\u2019m just so happy we were able to get back on our oval form that we\u2019ve been chasing all year. What a way to wrap up the oval races after some tough challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, expect the unexpected. The whole year just been waiting, waiting, waiting. It just never kind of came to us and just kept slipping here and there. Coming into this weekend knowing there were a hundred points on the table, having a good car here was crucial to having a shot at second in the championship. I don’t even know where I’m at right now (fourth), but pretty sure I go into Laguna (Seca) with a proper shot at being second in the championship again, which I did last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love that opportunity. I’d love to end it like that and kind of just pick it back up because, like I said, the rest of the year I felt a little bit of a lost puppy really.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simultaneously, Palou added to his burgeoning NTT IndyCar Series resume by clinching his fifth championship after finishing 10th in the Snap-on Makers and Fixers 250. He finished fifth in the first race. It was the mercurial Palou\u2019s fourth straight title since open-wheel reunification in 2008, tying a series record set by Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais from 2004-07.<\/p>\n

Palou, driver of the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, also became the youngest driver in series history to win five titles. Open-wheel icon and Houston native A.J. Foyt Jr. was 32 when he earned his fifth championship in 1967. Only \u201cSuper Tex,\u201d with seven, and native New Zealander Scott Dixon, with six, have won more INDYCAR titles than Palou. Dixon was 38 when he won his fifth title.<\/p>\n

Palou\u2019s numbers this season have been beyond box-office _ six wins, eight poles, seven podiums, 12 top-fives, 14 top-10s, 12 races led and 673 laps-led.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s tough to put into words,\u201d Palou said during his post-race presser alongside team-founder\/owner Ganassi and strategist Barry Wanser. \u201cEverything that I owe to this team, to these two men sitting next to me, that they give me the opportunity to be not only a race-winner, then a champion, now a five-time champion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s been incredible. I just feel like we just started yesterday. It just feels like we started yesterday. We’re just getting closer and closer. We’re having more fun and more fun each day. It’s been an absolute joy of a year. The last two years have been just magical for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Palou began the weekend still smarting from a mistake-marred, 20th<\/sup>-place finish in the Freedom 250 Grand Prix street race in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 23. Palou also was among a handful of series regulars greeted with nine-spot starting grid penalties in West Allis following unapproved engine changes after the D.C. event.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust so proud of this team\u201d said Palou, a 29-year-old native of Barcelona, Spain. \u201cToday was a really bad race for us. Like, we were suffering all the time, but I\u2019m like, \u2018Just keep focus, keep on, keep on going.\u2019 Great to have another championship and ready for the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the INDYCAR paddock has come to realize, that is hardly an idle comment from Palou. Consider these Palou Fast Facts en route to hoisting his latest Astor Challenge Cup:<\/p>\n

_ Palou clinched with one race remaining on the 18-event schedule. A six-time winner this season, he built such a comfortable point lead that the title had been within Palou\u2019s reach for the last month.<\/p>\n

_ Palou posted a fifth championship in six years since joining Chip Ganassi Racing in 2021, moving the team into first place as INDYCAR\u2019s winningest organization. The title is the 18th for CGR, breaking a tie with Team Penske for most in series history.<\/p>\n

_ Palou\u2019s five titles from 2021\u201326 (five in six seasons), is the shortest span from a driver\u2019s first through fifth championship. Foyt\u2019s first five covered eight seasons, 1960\u201367; Dixon\u2019s covered 16, 2003\u201318.<\/p>\n

_ Palou and CGR\u2019s fifth title together is the second-most championships by one driver\/team combination, behind Dixon and CGR\u2019s six.<\/p>\n

_ Palou\u2019s \u201cfour-peat\u201d with CGR marks the third time the organization has won four consecutive titles. The team first did so from 1996 through 1999 with Jimmy Vasser, two by Alex Zanardi of Italy and Juan Pablo Montoya of Colombia _ then again from 2008 to 2011 with Dixon followed by three consecutive with Dario Franchitti of Scotland. CGR is the only team with three distinct four-peats.<\/p>\n

_ CGR also has tied the INDYCAR record with six championships in seven seasons. CGR did it in 2020 with Dixon and now with Palou in 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. Team Penske won six championships from 1977 through 1983.<\/p>\n

_ Since reunification 19 years ago, CGR has set a record with 13 championships _ a win rate of 68.4 percent.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have great people around Alex, the team, the partners we’ve had,\u201d said Ganassi, himself a former series regular. \u201cIt takes a lot of people to make this stuff happen. I’m fortunate to have great people around us.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, I’m not even on the No. 10 car. I’m on the No. 9 car (with Dixon), so I get to enjoy it from a distance, almost, and seeing those guys set the pace. But it’s one team. We all work together. We’re all trying to win. It’s an open book with us all the time across the board with all the drivers, all the teams, and everyone. And the nice thing is, everybody on the team’s happy when someone on the team does well.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Ward, who started first Saturday and led when the race resumed Sunday, crossed the finish line 1.7535-seconds ahead of David Malukas in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet. Rinus VeeKay scored his first podium finish of an impressive season in the No. 76 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet.<\/p>\n

“Podium Baby!\u201d said VeeKay, a 25-year-old native of the Netherlands. \u201cAfter three fourth-place finishes this season, a podium feels incredible. It was a bit of an interesting one having to restart a race a day later on used tires. But it worked out really well. I think strategy was really good, and the car was incredible with the cooler conditions here.<\/p>\n

\u201cBig shout-out to the No. 76 Juncos Hollinger crew. And to be part of an all-Chevy podium is really cool.  Big thank you to Chevy for giving me all the power I needed to make all those passes from 24th to third.”<\/p>\n

Scott McLaughlin finished fourth in the No. 3 Clarience Technologies Team Penske Chevrolet, while 2025 Milwaukee winner Christian Rasmussen completed the top-five in the No. 21 Splenda Stevia Chevrolet of Ed Carpenter Racing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll in all, not a bad weekend but it should have been two podiums,\u201d said McLaughlin, a 33-year-old native of New Zealand. \u201cDixon is my hero so I don\u2019t want to say too much about what happened but we gifted the No. 76 a podium, simple as that. The No. 3 car was fantastic all weekend. Really proud of the effort from the crew because they were thrown into a tough situation with the weather. One more weekend to get a win and we are going to Laguna Seca to do just that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chevrolet-powered drivers took the top seven spots in the finishing order on a day that Honda clinched its 12th INDYCAR manufacturers\u2019 championship.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn eighth and a fifth-place finish is great for us,\u201d said Rasumssen, a 26-year-old native of Denmark. \u201cIt takes some pressure off on the Leader\u2019s Circle battle going into Laguna. Strong finishes for us, but you always want more. We had some good restarts there towards the end and were moving forward. We had a good race car, we improved the Splenda Stevia Chevy from Race 2 to Race 1 and were able to finish a couple spots higher. I\u2019m happy about today.”<\/p>\n

O\u2019Ward grabbed the lead for good on Lap 226 on a breathtaking final restart. Malukas led the field to the green flag, but his car was noticeably sluggish. O\u2019Ward dove low and McLaughlin moved high, with the trio going three-wide into Turn 1.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Ward pulled ahead for the lead, making one of the track-record 372 on-track passes for position, and never trailed thereafter. Malukas stayed within a second of O\u2019Ward for 10 laps after the restart but faded in the last 10 laps.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid did a phenomenal job. No one was going to catch him,\u201d O\u2019Ward said. \u201cHe was doing such a great job through traffic. He was on fire. I told him, \u2018Man, this story is just about beginning (for him).\u2019 He’s in a fantastic team. He’s an amazing driver. He’s great on and off the track. Whenever they start raining (wins) on him, he’s going to be like, they are very sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n

It marked the sixth career runner-up finish without a victory for Malukas. Four of those second-place finishes have come in his first year for Team Penske, which he joined this year for his fifth season in the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just so frustrated,\u201d said Malukas, a 24-year-old native of Chicago. \u201cWe had the car; we did everything right. We\u2019re just cursed. I literally believe I have some sort of curse. Everything was in our favor there. This weekend, both races we were having issues with the engine on restarts and coming out of the pits, needing to lift and having these events where we just lose power. That really let us down.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Ward and Malukas dominated the race, which was suspended after 90 laps Saturday due to rain and wet track conditions. They combined to lead 212 of 250 laps, with O\u2019Ward out front for 119 and Malukas 93.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just going to have to wait for something like that (slow restart) to happen in order to have a chance on him,\u201d O\u2019Ward said of Malukas. \u201cOtherwise, it was just going to be pedaling it to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rasmussen and fellow-Dane Christian Lundgaard, who ended up sixth in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, both led laps during the completion of the race but only during pit cycles. Otherwise, it was the O\u2019Ward-Malukas Show.<\/p>\n

Palou struggled with handling problems and kept a wide berth nearly every time a rival passed him. He led the standings by 97 points entering Race 2 after finishing fifth in the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250 earlier and needed to lead by just 54 points after the nightcap to seal the title. So, it was safety first.<\/p>\n

With the NFL\u2019s regular-season opener looming on Wednesday, Sept. 6, up next is INDYCAR\u2019s season-ending Mission Grand Prix of Monterey Friday through Sunday at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. The 2.238-mile\/11-turn road-course just south of San Francisco, featuring the famous \u201cCorkscrew\u201d complex, is Race 18 of the season.<\/p>\n

Palou has won the event three of the last four years, including two in a row. Race Day coverage on FOX Sports will begin at 2:30 p.m. (EDT).<\/p>\n

Palou will compete in a No. 10 Honda sporting a special livery saluting CGR legend and two-time INDYCAR champion Zanardi, who passed away May 1. \u201cI\u2019m very excited for next weekend,\u201d said Palou, aware of Zanardi\u2019s history at the track. \u201cMy favorite racetrack of the year, repping that beautiful livery in honor of Alex Zanardi.\u201d<\/p>\n

Max Garcia may have earned the right to skip school<\/strong> today after his stirring first career INDY NXT by Firestone victory Sunday at The Milwaukee Mile.<\/p>\n

Series rookie Garcia scored his first win in his 15th career start in INDYCAR\u2019s developmental series, driving the No. 12 Abel Motorsports machine under the checkered flag 0.9430-seconds ahead of the No. 68 Cusick Morgan Motorsports car of J.M. Correa, who also earned a career-best finish.<\/p>\n

Garcia, 17, certainly has a legitimate excuse for not being in his homeroom Monday morning at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, where he just started his senior year.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnbelievable,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cIt\u2019s been such a tough year for all of us at Abel. We knew we had a good oval package. We knew we set the car up more for the race, and we knew in practice we could move through cars. It was all about timing it right and then getting through everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to convince my mom not to let me go to school. Surely, this is something to celebrate. A day off would be nice, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rookie Jack Beeton of Australia continued his strong second half of the season by finishing third in the No. 45 HMD Motorsports machine, earning his third podium result in the last five races.<\/p>\n

Andretti Global\u2019s Max Taylor finished fourth in the No. 28 Susan G. Komen entry, while Nikita Johnson completed the top-five in the No. 21 Cape Motorsports Powered by ECR car and took the lead in a sizzling championship fight with two races remaining.<\/p>\n

Johnson drove from 15th at the start to earn his eighth top-five finish of the season. He leads Enzo Fittipaldi of Miami by three points and third-place Tymek Kucharczyk of Poland by 29 entering the season-ending Grand Prix of Monterey double-header Sept. 5-6 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Calif. It\u2019s tied for the fifth-closest race margin between the top two drivers with two races to go in series history.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just kept my head down, pushed really hard and found lines that other people didn\u2019t find until about halfway through,\u201d said Johnson, an 18-year-old native of St. Petersburg, Fla. \u201cI think that really helps, just playing around and trying different lines out when everybody was just stuck in one line. It was a really good points day for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fittipaldi finished seventh in the No. 67 HMD Motorsports car, while Kucharczyk placed 12th in the No. 71 HMD Motorsports machine.<\/p>\n

Garcia started ninth but steadily worked his way through the field on the historic 1.015-mile oval during the 90-lap\/91.35-miler. He passed Beeton for second on Lap 35 and pulled to within one second of leader and pole-sitter Josh Pierson of Andretti Global, who had led by more than two seconds in the early going.<\/p>\n

Under pressure from Garcia, Pierson\u2019s quest for his first career victory unraveled on Lap 54 when he spun in the No. 29 Starchive Andretti car in Turn 2 while leading and hit the tire barrier inside that corner to end his race. Pierson had led every lap to that point.<\/p>\n

Garcia inherited the lead and never surrendered it despite four restarts in the last 37 laps after the race went caution-free for the first 53 laps.<\/p>\n

Abel Motorsports driver Garcia was threatened only once on one of those restarts. Beeton looked under Garcia in Turn 1 on Lap 83 but couldn\u2019t complete the pass. On the next and final restart on Lap 86, Garcia left no doubt by getting a good jump and pulling away easily.<\/p>\n

Beeton and Correa raced side-by-side for second on that restart, allowing Garcia even more time and space out front. Correa eventually prevailed in that duel, one of 208 on-track passes, a track record for INDY NXT at Milwaukee.<\/p>\n
