In mid-June, he won the inaugural Mexico City race by 16.567 seconds over runner-up Christopher Bell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">Then came the dominating performance in Chicago over the Fourth of July weekend. (Photo by Meg Oliphant\/Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">And even if van Gisbergen avoids setting expectations for himself, other drivers in NASCAR\u2019s top division have sized him up as formidable competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cHe&#8217;s so good, and it&#8217;s rare that you see somebody stand out and distance himself from the competition as much as he is,\u201d said Kyle Larson, the defending Sonoma race winner. \u201cYou know, he&#8217;s way, way, way better than us at the road course stuff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cAnd he&#8217;s got his own technique, you can call it. Not his own, because the rest of the world does it\u2014you know, right-foot braking, clutching and all that stuff. You can&#8217;t teach an old dog new tricks\u2026 like there&#8217;s zero chance I can learn how to do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cAnd even if I did, like there&#8217;s zero chance that I can have it be better than what I&#8217;m probably doing with left-foot braking. So yeah, he&#8217;s just so good. He&#8217;s still new to the oval stuff, so he&#8217;s going to continue to get better at that. And, yeah, I mean, if he can figure out the ovals, he\u2019s going to be dominant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\"><b>In-Season Challenge pits LEGACY teammates against each other&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">LEGACY Motor Club driver Erik Jones is trying to take a business-as-usual approach to Sunday\u2019s Toyota\/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma, but there\u2019s a twist that may prevent him from doing so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">Jones is one of eight drivers still alive in the NASCAR Cup In-Season Challenge, with a $1-million prize awaiting the winner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">Here\u2019s the catch. To advance past the third round, Jones will have to finish higher than John Hunter Nemechek in the only third-round matchup that features one teammate against another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">Jones said Saturday he won\u2019t expect spotter Will Rodgers to apprise him of Nemechek\u2019s position as the race develops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cNo, probably not,\u201d Jones said. \u201cI didn\u2019t think or know where Ricky (Stenhouse, Jr., second-round opponent)) was all day (at Chicago), and then I drove it into the wall, and I kind of thought we gave that up, and then we crossed the finish line and it wasn\u2019t a very good day, and the first thing Ben (Beshore, crew chief) says is \u2018Well, we beat the 47 (Stenhouse).\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cAnd I was like, OK, that is cool.&nbsp; I don\u2019t know how. I will want to know right after for sure, if I\u2019m not aware of where he is at. But he doesn\u2019t need to let me know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">Rodgers, entered in Saturday\u2019s Xfinity Series race with Jones as his primary spotter, had a slightly different take.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cIf we are two or three back from him, coming down to it, I may say something\u201d Rodgers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\"><b>Alex Bowman, Bubba Wallace settle differences at dinner<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">As fierce as the Chicago Street Course battle between Alex Bowman and Bubba Wallace appeared at the time, it won\u2019t have a lasting impact on the drivers\u2019 relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">Bowman and Wallace, opponents in the second round of the In-Season Challenge, were fighting for position late in last Sunday\u2019s race. After repeated contact between their cars, Wallace\u2019s Toyota spun off the front bumper of Bowman\u2019s Chevrolet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">Bowman advanced to the tournament quarterfinals with an eighth-place finish to Wallace\u2019s 28th. But if there was any animosity after the race, there\u2019s none now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cHe bought me dinner on Thursday, which was super nice of him, \u201cBowman said. \u201cSo, I\u2019m appreciative of that. I think we probably raced a little bit unnecessarily hard in that situation, but we talked, and I think we\u2019re all good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cThe TV feed made it look worse than it really was off of (Turn) 2 there. I certainly didn\u2019t intentionally crash him, and unfortunately, the coverage was pretty rough. Bowman and I, I can say truthfully, we\u2019re fine moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\"><b>Difference between Next Gen and Xfinity cars has fueled JR Motorsports\u2019 success<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">When NASCAR introduced the Next Gen car into the Cup Series in 2022, the sanctioning body did so with the knowledge that the gap between the Cup and Xfinity Series platforms would widen considerably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">From 18-inch aluminum wheels with a single lug to a 5-speed sequential transmission versus a 4-speed manual \u201cH\u201d pattern transmission on Xfinity cars, the Cup race cars are more advanced technologically than their counterparts in NASCAR\u2019s lower series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">The difference between the two race cars, however, has been beneficial to stand-alone Xfinity teams, with JR Motorsports being the prime example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cI think we\u2019re seeing kind of a unique scenario play out for us,\u201d said reigning Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier, who drives the No. 7 Chevrolet for JRM. \u201cWith the Cup Series running the Next Gen car for the last couple of years, one of the things I think we\u2019ve done really well at JR Motorsports\u2014while we do have a great relationship with Hendrick Motorsports\u2014we do the majority of what we do in-house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cOn the engineering side of it, the suspension side of it, we do have Hendrick engines, but we do so much in-house\u2014all the aerodynamics. We\u2019re at the wind tunnel doing all that internally\u2026 I don\u2019t think people realize how really independent our small team is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cI think that\u2019s a great point that Justin makes,\u201d added team co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. during an announcement of an expanded partnership with sponsor Roto-Rooter \u201cI hadn\u2019t even thought of it like that, how all the work we\u2019ve done over the years have put us in this position, as the Cup teams have moved away from the technology we use toward the Next Gen technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">\u201cThose big Cup teams can\u2019t be quite as big of a resource to their Xfinity teams, and it\u2019s actually elevated our ability to compete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6185740787MsoNormal\">That\u2019s an understatement.
