Prior to Friday\u2019s effort, all four of Elliott\u2019s previous poles had come on what had been the series\u2019 restrictor-plate tracks \u2013 three at Daytona International Speedway and one at Talladega Superspeedway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019ve been wanting a pole outside of Daytona and Talladega for quite some time now,\u201d Elliott, a three-time Cup race winner, said. \u201cI felt like I was able to deliver a pole to my team that really deserves it, on way more than one occasion over the years. I felt like I haven\u2019t (done) my part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">Elliott was eighth quickest in the opening round that saw the 24 fastest advance; he was second fastest in the second round to advance to the final 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">He had been eighth in the day\u2019s lone practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">\u201cI think Ryan probably threw me a bone, it looked like he messed up,\u201d Elliott said of fellow competitor Ryan Blaney. \u201cHe had a pretty good lap going.<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-24894-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/racedaysa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/MENCS_BMS1_Elliott_040619.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/racedaysa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/MENCS_BMS1_Elliott_040619.mp3\">http:\/\/racedaysa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/MENCS_BMS1_Elliott_040619.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">\u201cThe starting spot is great, but it\u2019s also just a starting spot. I think the first pit box down there is probably more important than anything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">\u201cOur car has pace so I think if we can get it driving good, I think we have a chance (on Sunday).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">Blaney, driver of the Team Penske No. 12 Ford, was \u201cOne Lap Blaney\u201d through the first two rounds, racing his way to the top of the scoreboard with single-lap efforts. But the final round proved to be a different story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">\u201cI got greedy,\u201d Blaney admitted. \u201cGot greedy into (Turn) 3 and missed it. Probably would have run about a (14).45. Got loose out of (the turn) and lost it just a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">As a result, Blaney will start behind Elliott, third on the 37-car grid. His second-round run of 14.528 seconds at 132.076 mph did top the mark of 131.407 mph established by Denny Hamlin in 2015 for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, to set a new Bristol qualifying record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">William Byron will start alongside Elliott, his HMS teammate, after locking down the No. 2 starting spot. It was the second consecutive race in which Byron had qualified on the outside of the front row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">Erik Jones and Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing will begin the race in fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">Kurt Busch, winner of last year\u2019s Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol, struggled in qualifying and failed to make it out of the first round. The former series champion will start 27th Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">\u201cCar was loose; we didn\u2019t get a good time,\u201d Busch said. \u201cThat\u2019s all I have. I did one lap and I\u2019m in here talking for 30th. Car was loose. We didn\u2019t get a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6339183023MsoNormal\">Points leader Kyle Busch did not advance to the final round and will start 17th.
