By John Sturbin, Raceday San Antonio

ARLINGTON _ Complete with a catchy nickname, INDYCAR’s inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington went into the record book as “the new standard” for hosting and staging a domestic open-wheel street race.

Dubbed “America’s Street Race” by the FOX Sports broadcast team during Sunday’s live telecast from the Arlington Entertainment District, the hyperbole began days before Kyle Kirkwood’s winning pass against Alex Palou in Race No. 3 of the NTT IndyCar Series’ 18-event 2026 schedule.

“It’s been an incredible event,” said Kirkwood, Andretti Global’s 27-year-old emerging star. “This event was done right. The track was built properly with the fencing, the walls, the branding. It looked clean, exactly how a premier motorsports race should look like at a street-course.”

The 70-lap/191.1-miler was staged on a temporary 2.73-mile/14-turn layout designed by Tony Cotman against the backdrop of AT&T Stadium, home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, and Globe Life Field, home to MLB’s Texas Rangers. INDYCAR President J. Douglas Boles said during a pre-event interview with racedaySA.com that Sunday’s race was the first of a multi-year _ as in, three-to-five year _ contract among partners Roger S. Penske via Penske Entertainment, FOX Sports, the Cowboys and the Rangers through REV Entertainment.

“It’s incredible to race in such a central location, two of the biggest sports teams in the world, right?” Kirkwood said during his post-race presser. “I think the Dallas Cowboys are the biggest sports team in the world? One of ’em.

“Just the venue in general. I was talking to Doug before the race. There were some numbers in there that were Indy 500-like numbers for us. I could see this being one of our marquee events outside of the 500 in a very short period of time if we continue coming back here.”

That is one bold statement, considering the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge will celebrate its 110th edition in May as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and the world’s largest single-day sporting event.

Still, that line of reasoning began resonating as early as Friday morning during a pre-race “bullpen session” with series drivers. Six-time series champion Scott Dixon of New Zealand and Chip Ganassi Racing was among the experienced participants to call the event “the new standard” hours before the first Honda or Chevrolet twin-turbocharged V6 engine barked to life or the first wheel was turned in at-speed anger.

In addition to hyping this event as second only to the series’ crown jewel at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the GP of A was out-of-the-box compared to the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. That event will stage its 51st edition next month as America’s longest-running street race and the equivalent of Formula One’s famed Monaco Grand Prix.

“Yeah, this is a great event by any stretch, let alone for a first-year event,” said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports, seated next to Kirkwood as Andretti Global celebrated its 78th all-time win. “Thank you to (Cowboys owner) Jerry Jones and the team that put this together. I think everybody knows they do it right. After finishing the weekend, they did it right.

“It’s absolutely a big race on the circuit. We’ve known that INDYCAR is some of the best racing in motorsports for a long time. Again, to showcase that you need big events, events like this event here in Arlington, Texas. It was a tremendous success. We need more of these kinds of events.

“If you take a step back and you just look at stadiums in big cities _ the opportunity that offers to set up an amazing racetrack, to make for a big spectacle event in motorsport _ certainly that opportunity exists. I think a number of (team) owners have said they’d love to see this model replicated more and more. It takes a lot to pull off. It takes special people on-site to make it happen. We think this is a model that could be replicated and lead to successful events in INDYCAR.”

Sunday’s TV numbers added to the “atta-boys,” as Nielsen Research confirmed an average of 1,336,000 viewers tuned-in to watch Kirkwood’s winning drive live on FOX Sports. Eyeballs peaked to 1,563,000 from 1 to 1:15 p.m. (CDT) for an event whose starting time was moved up due to a forecast of high winds later in the day.

Recall that FOX Sports purchased 30 percent of Penske Entertainment last summer, and is widely viewed as a prime mover in the need to take more series races to the streets in a bid to attract a new and younger demographic. According to a report on RACER.com, for the first time since it welcomed FOX as its broadcast partner in 2025, INDYCAR has posted three consecutive TV audiences with an average exceeding 1-million viewers that did not include the Indianapolis 500.

Combined with 1,396,000 viewers for the season-opener on the Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., and 1,247,000 from Phoenix Raceway’s oval, Arlington’s audience brought the season’s average to 1,326,333 viewers per race. That represents a gloat-worthy improvement over the 891,000 average delivered during the three opening races from 2025.

Last year, FOX exceeded 1-million viewers only four times outside of the Indy 500. FOX nearly has matched that total during the first month of the 2026 season.

A three-time winner in 2025, Kirkwood’s first win of 2026 was the sixth of his career and fifth on a street course. Kirkwood executed an “all-or-nothing” pass against Palou on Lap 55 en route to victory in the ballyhooed return of open-wheel racing to North Texas after a 27-year run on Texas Motor Speedway’s high-banked/1.5-mile oval in Fort Worth. A total of 36 INDYCAR races were conducted at “The Great American Speedway” beginning with the historic first open-wheel night race on June 7, 1997 won by Billy Boat of A.J. Foyt Racing to April 2, 2023 won by Josef Newgarden of Team Penske.

Kirkwood took the current championship point lead at the expense of Palou, the four-time/reigning series champion and de facto street-circuit ace. Outright pace helped Kirkwood, who started seventh, overcome a tepid final pit stop and overhaul Palou down the stretch.

“We were in a dire straits situation,” Kirkwood recounted post-race. “This is probably the only place I can pass him. This is the only time I can surprise him. There was some urgency, but at the same time we were a lot quicker than him. He’s someone that is very trustworthy to race against. If you do some of those late lunges, you can trust he’s not going to drive you into the wall, like maybe some other drivers will.”

Palou termed Kirkwood’s calculated winning setup and pass “very impressive.”

“Yeah, I tried hard, man,” said Palou, driver of the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. “Kirkwood was really fast. I could see already on second and third stint that I was pushing as much as I could, using OT to try to get gaps. He was closing 3, 4/10ths on me. I was like, ‘Oh, man, it’s going to be tough.’

“Yeah, he just passed me incredibly. It was a very awesome overtake. Should have obviously defended a little bit better. It’s very easy to say now.

“Yeah, honestly didn’t really have much for him. I think I’m really happy getting on the podium and trying to steal a little bit of Andretti’s party this weekend. Yeah, right?”

Led by Kirkwood and his No. 27 JM Bullion/Gold.com Honda, Andretti Global placed three drivers in the top-four. Australian Will Power placed third in the No. 26 TWG AI Honda for his first podium with his new Andretti crew after 16 successful seasons at Team Penske. And Sweden’s Marcus Ericsson, who earned his first career pole Saturday, finished fourth in the No. 28 InPwr Honda.

A two-time series champion with Team Penske, Power celebrated his first podium with Andretti Global with a shout-out to the event organizers.

“It was totally, totally full,” Power, a 45-year-old native of Australia, said of the grandstand suites. “The track looked amazing. It just looked like a big event. This is setting a new standard of what our events should look like. I can’t thank Penske Entertainment, the Cowboys, the Rangers, right, the whole group is just amazing.”

Palou said the event was “incredible” on several levels. “As Will said, already I would say on Friday it felt like a big, big event,” said Palou, a 28-year-old native of Spain. “You can see the facility. You can see how the track was built. You can see we have a long street track, which is what we’ve been pushing for. It’s been a 10-out-of-10. There’s nothing you can say that this was bad.

“The attendance was incredible. The fans were incredible. They stayed until the end, like when we were just pitting-in now after a full-course yellow. Everybody was just there being happy. Yeah, it’s incredible to be part of this.

“My expectations for this event were super-high because of all the people that is involved on making it. Obviously, I saw all the ideas that they have, all the renderings and stuff. I think that’s very easy to do.

“My expectations were high, but this has exceeded by 10 times, this event in general. Obviously, there’s always stuff you can improve. There’s bumps you can avoid having, improve year-by-year. By far this is the best street-course race I’ve been a part of. It’s really fun to see so many people on the stands. The energy was incredible. I cannot wait to be back here next year.”

Towriss said all members of the revamped Andretti stable shared in Kirkwood’s victory. “As Kyle mentioned, there’s so much that goes on in car prep and teamwork over the off-season to get to this point,” Towriss said. “Obviously Kyle, he was ‘on’ today. I think I sent that text multiple times. He was hard on himself for a mistake in qualifying. I sent him a text, ‘Forget all that, you’re so fast, just go out and show it on the track tomorrow.’

“Really all the guys 100 percent (contributed) to overcome some adversity. Wasn’t our best day in the pit lane. I think it shows the resiliency of this team, the speed of the cars, the talent of the drivers. Today Kyle came out on top. I couldn’t be more proud of Kyle and the effort he put out there.”

Pato O’Ward completed the top-five in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, the day’s highest-ranked Team Chevy driver.

“This Andretti Honda camp is fricking strong on street courses,” said O’Ward, a 26-year-old native of Mexico with family ties to San Antonio. “We’ve got a lot of work to do if we want to start winning races on outright pace against them.”

Fans sporting O’Ward shirts in McLaren’s orange-and-gray colors were prominent Sunday, attesting to Pato’s popularity in the Tex-Mex community.

“I’ve had such a great weekend driving around this place and everyone here and involved in this event deserves the sold-out crowd that I saw today,” O’Ward said. “They’ve set a new standard on what INDYCAR races should look like every single weekend.”

Once in the lead, Kirkwood built a five-second advantage by Lap 66. But that margin evaporated when Ed Carpenter Racing’s Christian Rasmussen of New Zealand nosed his No. 21 Java House Chevrolet into the tire barrier at pit exit on Lap 68, triggering the day’s first full-course yellow.

That bunched the field for a one-lap dash to the checkered flag. Kirkwood pulled away on the restart when a second and final full-course yellow flew due to a collision between the No. 18 BMax Honda of Dale Coyne Racing’s Romain Grosjean of France and the No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet of Nolan Siegel deep in the field.

Kirkwood then cruised around the circuit one last time under yellow to cheers from what event organizers declared was “a complete grandstand sellout.” The organizers predicted a three-day total of between 75,000 and 80,000 fans would attend based upon ticket sales spanning all 50 states and 20 countries.

“This weekend proved that Arlington is built for world-class racing,” said Bill Miller, president of the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington and a longtime Penske executive. “We set out to deliver an amazing experience for guests, teams and competitors. Our goal was to redefine the guest experience.

“This event, from the record-setting fan turnout to the incredible energy across the entertainment district, the inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington exceeded expectations and set a powerful foundation for future events.”

Event highlights included:

_ Record merchandise sales for a non-Indianapolis 500 event, albeit without any hard numbers as proof.

_ The largest premium hospitality program fulfilled outside of the Indianapolis 500, with premium experiences and corporate activations across the circuit. Included was a sold-out bank of pit lane suites and two club spaces.

_ A festival-style atmosphere featuring fan zones, live entertainment and interactive experiences that elevated the weekend beyond a traditional race event.

_ Global broadcast exposure showcasing Arlington and the North Texas sports community to millions of viewers worldwide via FOX Sports and its various networks.

“We wanted to introduce INDYCAR to a new generation of fans by making this a family friendly event,” Miller said. “We were energized by the number of families who came out to enjoy race weekend, and this is only the beginning.”

Additional information on the 2026 Java House Grand Prix of Arlington, including ticketing and event updates, will be available in the coming weeks at www.gparlington.com.

SEE: Race Results

Kirkwood now leads the standings by 26 points over the mercurial Palou. “It’s only race No. 3, so I’m not looking at the championship,” Kirkwood said. “But it is nice to say it’s the first time I’ve ever led the championship in INDYCAR.”

Based upon his own experiences, Power said Kirkwood is fully-equipped for a bona fide championship challenge. “He does his homework,” Power said of his teammate. “He’s the real deal, man. From go-karting all the way up, he’s won every single championship.

“This guy is very good. Very good. Incredible. He doesn’t do it just through natural ability.
