Dixon recorded his fastest speed<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> during the last hour of <\/span><span class=\"s4\">hot-lapping<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">&#8220;It&#8217;s testing <\/span><span class=\"s4\">_<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> just trying to get through the test list, lots of changes,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s4\">said <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Dixon<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, a <\/span><span class=\"s4\">44<\/span><span class=\"s4\">-year-old native of New Zealand<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and CGR\u2019s longest-tenured driver<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. \u201cWe <\/span><span class=\"s4\">didn&#8217;t<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> do the October test, so first time with the hybrid here, which <\/span><span class=\"s4\">definitely adds<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> some elements to it and makes it <\/span><span class=\"s4\">pretty interesting<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. I think <\/span><span class=\"s4\">it<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> going to determine a lot race-wise, maybe even for the shootout at the end. I think it could determine that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">\u201cSo, trying to clarify a lot of those situations to make sure that <\/span><span class=\"s4\">you&#8217;re<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> covered muscle memory-wise and memory-wise. It comes down to that. So even in qualifying, I think it be a few different strategies of how to get that right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Dixon took <\/span><span class=\"s4\">P1<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> from two-time<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\/<\/span><span class=\"s4\">reigning race champion Josef Newgarden, who <\/span><span class=\"s4\">placed<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> second at 225.125 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">mph <\/span><span class=\"s4\">in the No. 2 Shell V-Power <\/span><span class=\"s4\">NiTRO<\/span><span class=\"s4\">+ Team Penske Chevrolet. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">A two-time series champion, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Newgarden <\/span><span class=\"s4\">will try<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> to become the first driver to win <\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u201cThe Greatest Spectacle in Racing\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> three years in a row <\/span><span class=\"s4\">on <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Sunday, May 25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">\u201cToday was really solid just to start out,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s4\">said <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Newgarden<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, 34<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. \u201cThe big thing is you come here with a new car or an existing car that <\/span><span class=\"s4\">you\u2019re<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> taking apart and completely rebuilding it. For most everybody here, putting a car on the track for the first time and hoping it just goes relatively quick<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">When the car is fast, everything else can be fixed. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">It\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the car\u2019s speed that fixes everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">\u201cFor us, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">it\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> been a <\/span><span class=\"s4\">really good<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> start. It <\/span><span class=\"s4\">doesn\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> mean <\/span><span class=\"s4\">it\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> going to be all smooth sailing but I hope we can come out of this and be prepared for the Month of May.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Two-time 500 winner Takuma Sato <\/span><span class=\"s4\">of Japan <\/span><span class=\"s4\">started his \u201cone-off\u201d Indianapolis 500 effort with <\/span><span class=\"s4\">typical <\/span><span class=\"s4\">vigor, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">placing<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> third at 225.069<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> mph<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> in the No. 75 AMADA Honda fielded by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Marcus Armstrong<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">led three Meyer Shank Racing cars in the top eight, as <\/span><span class=\"s4\">t<\/span><span class=\"s4\">he<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> native<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> New Zealander<\/span><span class=\"s4\">was fourth at 224.987<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> mph<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> in the No. 66 SiriusXM\/Root Insurance Honda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Colton Herta <\/span><span class=\"s4\">completed<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the top<\/span><span class=\"s4\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s4\">five at 224.857<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> mph<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> in the No. 26 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Gainbridge<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> Honda of Andretti Global.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Besides MSR putting Armstrong fourth, four-time 500<\/span><span class=\"s4\">champion<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> Helio Castroneves<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> of Brazil<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> seventh and <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Sweden\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Felix Rosenqvist eighth, another trend line<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> emerged _ <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Honda engines are <\/span><span class=\"s4\">oval-<\/span><span class=\"s4\">fast.<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> Honda-powered cars have <\/span><span class=\"s4\">swept<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the first three races of the <\/span><span class=\"s4\">2025 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">season, two on street circuits and another on a road-course. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Honda<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> engines<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> powered nine of the 10 fastest drivers <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Wednesday<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, with Newgarden the only <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Team <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Chevy <\/span><span class=\"s4\">entrant<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> in that group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Honda drivers also <\/span><span class=\"s4\">locked up<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the top three spots on the \u201cno-tow\u201d list of drivers\u2019 best laps turned without the speed-enhancing edge of an aerodynamic slipstream from a leading car. Rosenqvist was the top no-tow driver at 220.835 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">mph <\/span><span class=\"s4\">in the No. 60 SiriusXM Honda, followed by three-time<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\/reigning<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> series champion Alex Palou <\/span><span class=\"s4\">of Spain <\/span><span class=\"s4\">at 220.354 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">mph <\/span><span class=\"s4\">in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Testing <\/span><span class=\"s4\">is scheduled to resume<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> at 9:30 a.m. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">(EDT) <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Thursday. Teams will have access from 9:30-noon to the same elevated turbo boost levels as \u201cFast Friday\u201d practice <\/span><span class=\"s4\">booked on <\/span><span class=\"s4\">May 16 and PPG Presents Armed Forces Qualifying on May 17-18. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">B<\/span><span class=\"s4\">oost will <\/span><span class=\"s4\">then <\/span><span class=\"s4\">be reduced to race levels from 2-5 p.m. for the final segment of testing this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">\u201cI\u2019m excited to turn up the boost and curious to see how this hybrid is going to be used in qualifying,\u201d said Pato <\/span><span class=\"s4\">O\u2019Ward<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, 16th overall at 222.775 mph in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. \u201cI think everybody is kind of playing a guessing game now, so we\u2019ll see what\u2019s the best one <\/span><span class=\"s4\">(Thursday)<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> A native of Mexico with family ties to San Antonio, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">O\u2019Ward<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> bid for his first Indy 500 victory was thwarted last May when he was passed by Newgarden in Turn 3 on the 200<\/span><span class=\"s7\">th<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and final lap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Thirty-four drivers are eligible to participate when Indianapolis 500 practice <\/span><span class=\"s4\">officially <\/span><span class=\"s4\">opens Tuesday, May 13, as Jacob Abel, Louis Foster <\/span><span class=\"s4\">of Great Brita<\/span><span class=\"s4\">i<\/span><span class=\"s4\">n <\/span><span class=\"s4\">and <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Russian\/Israeli <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Robert Shwartzman completed the Rookie Orientation Program<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">In addition,<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">former Indy 500 pole-sitter <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Marco Andretti, Devlin DeFrancesco<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> of <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Canada<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, Callum Ilott<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> of Great Britain<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">NASCAR Cup Series regular <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Kyle Larson and Sato completed the veteran refresher test Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">All 34 drivers expected to compete next month for the <\/span><span class=\"s4\">traditional <\/span><span class=\"s4\">33 starting spots were on<\/span><span class=\"s4\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s4\">track <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Wednesday<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, turning a combined 2,805 laps. Rookie Swartzman was the busiest driver, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">logging<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> 133 laps in the No. 83 PREMA Racing Chevrolet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">In an in<\/span><span class=\"s4\">triguing <\/span><span class=\"s4\">twist<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">current championship leader Palou was one of the most inactive drivers, completing just 46 laps despite no apparent technical problems. Palou, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">who is <\/span><span class=\"s4\">seeking his first <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Indy <\/span><span class=\"s4\">500 victory, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">placed<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> sixth overall at 224.786<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> mph<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Larson, the <\/span><span class=\"s4\">2021 Cup Series champio<\/span><span class=\"s4\">n for Hendrick Motorsports,<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> was 11th at 223.430 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">mph <\/span><span class=\"s4\">in the No. 17 Hendrickcars.com Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Larson is once again trying to complete <\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u201cT<\/span><span class=\"s4\">he Double\u201d of racing in the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR\u2019s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Memorial Day Sunday<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">O<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ne caution period <\/span><span class=\"s4\">interrupted the <\/span><span class=\"s4\">more than six hours of testing. Graham Rahal brushed the SAFER Barrier in Turn 3 twice in his No. 15 United Rentals Honda fielded by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing with 13 minutes remaining.
