MADISON, Ill. \u2013 Eddie Krawiec\u2019s<\/strong> start to the NHRA<\/a> Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship has been nothing short of perfect. He has won the first two Pro Stock Motorcycle events, firmly putting the three-time world champion in the driver\u2019s seat heading to this weekend\u2019s AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park.<\/p>\n

But all Krawiec has to do is take one look at his competition to know the work is far from over and this is no time for celebrating. The NHRA\u2019s six-race playoffs hits the halfway mark in St. Louis and, despite the recent success, expect Krawiec to be as hungry as ever on his Screamin\u2019 Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just staying focused, just want to go one round at a time and do my job on the starting line,\u201d Krawiec said. \u201cI have a good motorcycle under me. I\u2019m kind of priding myself in my riding that I\u2019ve done the first two Countdown races. That\u2019s what you need to do. There\u2019s too many good motorcycles out here to slack off. If I want to win a championship, I have to do my job and, first things first, that\u2019s on the starting line. I\u2019ve got a great crew behind me, I\u2019ve got a great motorcycle under me and I\u2019m very confident. I think that\u2019s the combination for going rounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Alex Laughlin (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were last year\u2019s winners of the event that will be televised on FOX Sports 1, including live final eliminations coverage starting at 2:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Oct. 1. It is the third straight race to kick off the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series\u2019 six-race playoffs and there is nobody hotter in the entire sport right now than Krawiec, who has 40 career wins.<\/p>\n

He won in Indy and started the Countdown to the Championship with victories in Charlotte and Reading, opening up a 71-point lead on LE Tonglet and an 89-point advantage on Hector Arana Jr. Heading to ideal racing conditions in St. Louis has Krawiec excited for more opportunities to win, and the talented veteran isn\u2019t shy about his mindset in going after another world title.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of surreal right now,\u201d said Krawiec, who has five victories in 2017. \u201cI don\u2019t want it to stop. We want to win every race in the Countdown. That\u2019s our goal. We want to win every single race. We\u2019re racers. There\u2019s no better time to hit your stride than when you\u2019re rolling into the Countdown. The way Pomona is this year, being a point and a half race, you better have a 140-point lead rolling into Pomona if you think you\u2019re going to have a cushion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Krawiec was impressed with his bike\u2019s performance in the warm weather at Reading, backing it up with incredible reaction times that have been a staple in Krawiec\u2019s title seasons. With everything coming together in conditions that have normally been difficult for Krawiec and longtime teammate Andrew Hines, he\u2019s confident in what his team can do this weekend in St. Louis. A third straight playoff win would open up a commanding lead, but Krawiec isn\u2019t thinking too far ahead.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve turned the corner on our program, just on the engine tuning side of it,\u201d said Krawiec, a two-time St. Louis winner. \u201cWe\u2019ve always struggled in the heat. I\u2019m excited and I\u2019m kind of licking my chops for St. Louis. I love cool races and it\u2019s going to be a good one. To be able to get to these facilities and have great racing surfaces is a key thing for all of us in the Countdown.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve Torrence jumped back into the points lead in Top Fuel, but will try to hold off the hard-charging Doug Kalitta, who won in Charlotte, and Reading winner Brittany Force.<\/p>\n

Beckman won for the second time in Funny Car at Gateway, but must track down teammate and reigning champ Ron Capps, who won on Sunday in Reading to regain the points lead.<\/p>\n

Laughlin played spoiler a year ago in Pro Stock, winning his first career race, and will look to do the same in 2017 against the likes of points leader Bo Butner, Greg Anderson and rookie Tanner Gray.<\/p>\n

The AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals also features thrilling competition in the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, as well as the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. After Nitro qualifying, stick around to see the spectacular Larsen Motorsports jet dragsters sponsored by Florida Tech and Matrix System. Known for their exciting pre-run flame shows and after burner pops, jet cars are thrust driven vehicles propelled by jet engines.<\/p>\n

As always, fans can interact with their favorite drivers as they\u2019re granted an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet. Mello Yello Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 3:45 and 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 1:15 and 3:45 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1.<\/p>\n
